The Untouchables (1959): Chicago. November 9, 1932. FDR has just been elected president, and the repeal of Prohibition is inevitable. But later that night, Ness and his men smash another of Capone's breweries. Agent Youngfellow asks Eliot, "Are we going to be out of work?" But Ness tells him no-- after all, bootleg booze was only a part of the Capone empire: there's still narcotics, gambling, prostitution, protection rackets, etc. Capone may start muscling in on legitimate businesses; in fact, Ness is having a meeting with Mayor Anton Cermak-- they want to "clean up this town" before the Chicago World's Fair in the spring of 1933. Miami. Giuseppe "Joe" Zangara, a man with homicidal tendencies, decides to kill the president. A newspaper vendor is hawking his papers; Zangara talks to him, and is surprised to learn that Hoover is no longer president. But Zangara sticks to his crazy idea to kill the president, no matter who he is. Chicago. Ness attends a press conference with the Mayor. Cermak says that the Chicago World's Fair will draw 75-million people, bringing the city a revenue of $1-billion. (which means the average visitor will spend a whopping $13.33) The Mayor says, with the big rat Capone out of the way, they will now eliminate the puppet rats; a photographer snaps his photo. On the front page of the newspaper is his picture along with a headline "Mayor Refers to Capone's Gang as Rats." At the Montmartre club, Frank Nitti is having a meet with his lieutenants: Louis "Little New York" Campagna, Frank Diamond, Jake "Dodo" Ryan, and last and certainly least Bill Skidmore. Nitti's plenty sore. Holding the paper, Nitti grouses, "That fat, stinkin' Bulgarian coal miner!" Skidmore corrects him: "Bohemian." Nitti yells, "Shut up!! Don't gimme corrections. I wanna know something, I ask." Nitti decides to bump off Mayor Cermak. Bill Skidmore, backed by Diamond and Campagna, suggests they get Cermak involved in graft; he's brought in a pansy lawyer from Boston, Ira Peterson. But when the plan backfires, Nitti has Jake Ryan and Louis Campagna take Peterson for a "one way ride"-- they throw Peterson into the Chicago River, weighted down with some heavy chains. Bill Skidmore doesn't make any more suggestions, and Nitti goes back to his original plan to rub out the Mayor. February 1933. At the Montmartre club; Nitti has brought in a couple of top Detroit hitmen: "Milwaukee" Minnelli and Rollie Sutton. They are going to keep tabs on Mayor Cermak's habits, then do the hit. Meanwhile Jake Ryan, who collects protection money, goes to the Elite Dry Cleaning shop and comes on to Sally Jansen; her husband Tom Jansen beats up Jake Ryan. Every morning, the Mayor has breakfast between 9:40 and 10:00 at Mrs. Swoboda's coffee shop. Ness has assigned Bill Youngfellow and Jack Rossman as his bodyguards; Cermak humorously refers to them as "Hans and Fritz, the Katzenjammer Kids."* When Eliot Ness joins the Mayor for breakfast, we learn that Eliot has a son. (this is the only time his child is mentioned during the entire run of the show) Ness tells the Mayor he's 35. (In real life, Eliot Ness was born on April 19, 1903, so he would have been 30 in 1933.) At the Montmartre club, Minnelli and Sutton tell Nitti they're ready to do the hit tomorrow at 9:50 a.m.; they think it will be a piece of cake -- unfortunately for them, being from out of town, they never recognized Youngfellow and Rossman who always stick to the Mayor. Next day, about a half hour before the 9:50 a.m. hit, Jake Ryan sets off an explosion at the Elite Dry Cleaning shop, killing Tom Jansen; Ryan gets caught by Cam Allison and a cop. Ness tells Ryan he'll get the chair for murder one; Ryan wants to make a deal with Ness, he'll give him info: they're about to kill Mayor Cermak. Ness says, "Okay, it's a deal." (that doesn't sound like Ness.) Jake Ryan tells him all about the impending hit at Swoboda's coffee shop nearby. Ness tells the cops to arrest him for murder one. Ryan tells Ness he made a deal. Ness retorts, "Did I?" (that sounds like Ness.) All Ryan can do is yell, "You lousy, stinkin' cop! It's a double-cross!" Ness quips, "That's what it is. How does it feel?" Rico speeds Ness and Cam Allison to the coffee shop with his car; Ness runs inside the shop and gets the Mayor down on the floor, and tells everyone to hit the deck. A speeding car goes by; Minnelli blasts the shop with his chopper, but thanks to Ness' warning nobody gets hurt. Rico sets up a roadblock with his car; Rico and Cam shoot down Minnelli and his driver. On the sidewalk, Rollie Sutton pulls out his chopper; Youngfellow and Rossman let him have it. The Mayor's life was saved. But Nitti would make other attempts on Mayor Cermak's life-- that was now an obsession with Nitti.
