The Untouchables (1959): 1934. Prohibition had been repealed (the Volstead Act ran from January 17, 1920 - April 7, 1933). The syndicate was looking for new sources of revenue. Frank Nitti expands his empire, and goes after small theatres-- with his extortion racket. Late one night, after theatre owner Harold Coldman had refused to pay, Nitti has his triggerman Louie Campagna throw some acid into Coldman's face, blinding him. Eliot Ness and his men are on the case-- this is only the latest in a series of muggings and beatings; even a theatre was burned down. Ness knows if he lets Nitti get away with extorting the small, independent theatre owners, in a few months Nitti will go after the big chains. Ness is determined to stop it now. Frank Nitti is throwing a private party, some of the guests are Sidney Rogers (the glib liaison man in the extortion racket), and his main squeeze Ellie Morley (former showgirl), and crooked lawyer Ramsey Lennox (who used to be the mouthpiece for Al Capone). Frank Nitti's having a good time-- he's on the couch, and has a beautiful girl on each arm. But when Ramsey Lennox tells him Ness is on the case, Nitti gets mad, and says, "I've had it up to here with Ness!" Nitti says this racket is better than bootleg booze in the old days-- back then, they had breweries and stills for Ness to smash, but with the protection racket, all they have is words and contracts. And Nitti has plenty of theatre owners signed up for his protection already. Nitti is now ready to go after J. N. Miller, who owns Star Theatres, a chain of 1,000 houses across America; it's a $100 million business. When the boys say it's too big to take on, Nitti tells them: the more they have, the more for us. Since Miller lives in Miami, Nitti decides to go after his local manager Jerry Dockstone. When Dockstone doesn't buy protection, Nitti's boys beat up his workers and blow up some theatres. Dockstone goes to Ness. In order to catch them, Ness wants to wire Dockstone's office, and record the crooks as they offer him protection again. But, it's too late-- when Dockstone starts his car, a bomb blows it up. J. N. Miller flies up from Miami, and gives Nitti $100,000. But Nitti tells him, they want 5% of his take-- that's $5 million. Miller says that will bankrupt him; they counter it's only 5%. Miller says they are spending millions converting to talkies (considering the first talkie was in 1927, which was 7 years ago, that sounds like a phony excuse). But Miller agrees. Thanks to fearless reporter Jason MacIntyre, the extortion story gets out; he has Variety print the headline: Hood Trix Nix Pic Biz (Hood Tricks Hurt Picture Business).* All the major newspapers in Chicago reprint MacIntyre's articles (but in plain English). Nitti's boys rough him up. Ness flies to Miami to meet with J. N. Miller; either he'll testify voluntarily against Nitti, or Ness will serve him with a subpoena. Ness finds out that Sidney Rogers used to go under the name Zoran Bresnovitch; he's wanted for violation of the Mann Act (crossing state lines with hookers), breaking parole, and is implicated in Dockstone's murder. Ness arrests Rogers. Ness needs 2 witnesses to prove his extortion case against Nitti, and now he has 2-- J. N. Miller and Sidney Rogers. Back in Chicago, Ness and Rossi and Cam Allison are in their car, escorting Miller to the courthouse. Nitti has his boys machine-gun Ness' car; Ness and his men fire back. When they get out of the car, one of the hoods is lying on street, apparently dead. Suddenly, he picks up his machine gun. Cam Allison jumps in front of Ness, shielding him, and is machine-gunned; Rossi shoots the hood. Cam dies in Ness' arms. Even though they were nicknamed the Untouchables-- because they couldn't be touched with bullets or bribes-- this time, one of them died. And Nitti had gone too far. Ness and his men attend Cam's funeral, and all of the Untouchables wear black bands around their left arms, to show they are in mourning. Then they go after Nitti like never before. Nitti has Rogers sprung on bail, but only so he can kill him easier. When Rogers tries to skip town with his girl Ellie, Nitti has Louie stick her in the back with a shiv. Now, Rogers has nothing to lose, and will testify. This is a death sentence for Nitti. Mario goes to Nitti, and tells him the mob Council demands he come to them. The 6 members find Nitti guilty of blowing the protection racket-- because of Nitti, Rogers is singing, and Miller is signing statements. All 6 members vote thumbs down. Many's the time Nitti told someone, "You're dead." Now, it was his turn. Fingered by the mob, hunted by Ness, Nitti goes on the lam. Ness and all his Untouchables chase Nitti in a hail of bullets. Nitti runs down into a subway station, and while fleeing, loses his balance and falls onto the subway tracks, while a speeding train is approaching. So died Frank Nitti, the brutal "Enforcer" for Al Capone, under the rushing wheels of a Chicago train. (synopsis by: kdh)
