The Untouchables (1959): New York, 1933. Racketeers are poking their greasy fists into every corner of the nation's business. The Fulton fish market in New York, run by Frank Mercouris, supplies fish on the East Coast to as far west as the Mississippi; they supply 700-million pounds of fish a year, worth $200-million. When Captain Joe McGonigle, owner of the fishing boat the Margie Mac, won't pay protection money, 2 of Mercouris' hoods, Lenny Shore and Swede Kelso, drown his deck hand, and it makes the newspapers; it's only the beginning of trouble with the Syndicate moving in-- and so Eliot Ness and his men fly to New York. Dutch Schultz, speaking for the Syndicate, tells Frank Mercouris: "no more rough stuff." Meanwhile, Ness is talking to Capt. Joe McGonigle; Ness wants him to testify in front of the grand jury. Ness tells him he knows how the mob operates: a fee to tie up a boat at the city dock, a fee to buy ice, a fee to unload; and the wholesalers are being charged protection money, too. Ness tells McGonigle that his friend Carlo Feruzzi is organizing the retailers to break away from Mercouris and the Syndicate. But after Ness leaves, Lenny Shore talks to McGonigle, and has the captain's boat blown up. Later McGonigle, who has nothing left to lose, talks to Carlo Feruzzi. Lenny Shore has Ness' phone wiretapped, and that night overhears McGonigle phoning Ness. Eliot says he'll meet McGonigle, who is heading home, at his house in one hour; but McGonigle gets rubbed out in his garage outside his home. Now Mercouris has the Syndicate on his back. The Syndicate is headed by: Joe Kulak (the Teacher), Louis "Lepke" Buchalter (of the garment industry, he would later found "Murder, Inc."), Jake Gurrah (who dominates the Teamster's union), and Dutch Schultz. They give Mercouris the word: no more killing. But Carlo Feruzzi meets with the retailers to buck the Syndicate. Mercouris decides to take care of Feruzzi without killing him; he sends over Lenny Shore and Swede Kelso, and Kelso throws some acid in Feruzzi's face. In the hospital, Carlo Feruzzi is blind, and his entire head is wrapped in bandages. Ness phones all the New York papers: the Chronicle, Record, Globe, Dispatch. They print headlines about the acid attack. The whole city is mad, and the Syndicate fears that now the grand jury will do something. The Syndicate decides to throw the public a scapegoat-- to take the public pressure off, they finger Lenny Shore. Mercouris assigns the rubout to Swede Kelso. But the Swede is Lenny's buddy; the Swede puts 3 slugs into Lenny at close range, but purposely misses the chest. Even though this didn't kill him, Ness tells the papers that Lenny is dead. Lenny agrees to testify before the grand jury; to make extra sure the Syndicate doesn't find him (even though the papers said he's dead), Ness puts Lenny in protective custody in the one place the Syndicate would never look for him: the widow McGonigle's house. Meanwhile, Mercouris is throwing a "wake" for his late pal Lenny-- a big party at the Sovereign Hotel, with 6 waiters and service for 40. Lenny manages to sneak out of the house past Lee Hobson and heads to the hotel. He knows Mercouris hung him out to dry and decides to be a guest at his own funeral. At the shindig, there is champagne, music, lots of beautiful women and dancing. Lenny, injured and bleeding, drags himself to the party. The Swede is happy to see he didn't kill Lenny after all; then Lenny pumps a couple of slugs into him while Mercouris jumps under a table begging and pleading for his life. Just then, Ness and Enrico Rossi and Lee Hobson barge in; they arrest Lenny and Mercouris. Lenny Shore got life imprisonment. Frank Mercouris, convicted by Lenny's testimony, was executed on March 25, 1933. The news of his execution caused prices at the Fulton fish market to tumble 52%. (synopsis by: kdh)
